What Are the 3 Types of AI? A Leader’s Guide

There are three types of artificial intelligence: narrow AI (weak AI), which performs a specific task; general AI (AGI), which reasons like a human across any domain; and strong AI (superintelligence), which surpasses human capabilities in every area. Today, only the first type actually exists in business environments.

But if you’re a CEO, CHRO, or board member, the real question isn’t “what are the types of AI” — it’s “which one affects my decisions today, and which one should I anticipate tomorrow”.

Type 1: Narrow AI — What You’re Already Using

Because some vendors are selling AGI before it exists. Because investment decisions are being made on promises that confuse the categories. Knowing the difference between narrow AI and AGI means knowing which questions to ask your technology providers.

Type 3: Strong AI, or Superintelligence

Strong AI, sometimes called artificial superintelligence, refers to a hypothetical system that would surpass human cognitive capabilities across all domains simultaneously: creativity, abstract reasoning, complex problem-solving, social interaction.

This is the territory of philosophy and long-range forecasting, not 3-year business strategy.

Thinkers like Nick Bostrom and Stuart Russell have formalized the theoretical risks. Academic and institutional work is ongoing on the safeguards that need to be built before this stage is reached.
