What Are the 4 Types of Artificial Intelligence?

There are four types of artificial intelligence: reactive AI, limited memory AI, theory of mind, and self-aware AI. The first two exist and are deployed in businesses today. The last two remain theoretical. As a business leader, you are already working with the first two, whether you know it or not.


Type 1: Reactive AI

This is the simplest form. It receives an input, it produces an output. It remembers nothing. It does not learn. It does exactly what it was programmed to do, nothing more.

The classic example: Deep Blue, IBM’s program that defeated Garry Kasparov at chess in 1997. It analyzed millions of possible positions and chose the best move. But it retained nothing from one game to the next.

In business today: spam filtering systems, basic recommendation engines, some first-level conversational agents. If your website suggests “you might also like these products” without considering your history, that is reactive AI.

Type 2: Limited Memory AI

This is where things get serious for business leaders. This category of AI uses past data to improve future decisions. It learns. It adapts. It has a memory window.

Concrete examples:

  • Autonomous vehicles that analyze driving data from the last few seconds to adjust their trajectory.
  • Bank fraud detection tools that compare a transaction against the customer’s past behavior.
  • ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude: all operate on this principle. They were trained on massive datasets and generate responses based on that learned context.

Maroc Cloud recently launched Gemini Enterprise in Morocco, with the stated goal of channeling the rise of AI in business. This is a type 2 tool, deployed at organizational scale, made available to Moroccan companies looking to integrate it into their business processes.

This is also the type of AI powering algorithmic recruitment tools. Type 3: Theory of Mind

This category does not exist yet. It refers to an AI capable of understanding the emotions, intentions, and beliefs of a human interlocutor, and adapting its behavior accordingly.

Not a simulation. Genuine understanding.

Research is advancing on this topic, but no commercial system has achieved it to date. This stage remains theoretical.

Why does this matter for a business leader? Because many vendors will sell you tools described as “empathetic” or “emotionally intelligent.” These tools produce statistical approximations, not understanding in the sense of theory of mind. The distinction matters when you are evaluating what a tool can actually do in an HR or customer context.


Type 4: Self-Aware AI

This is the ultimate stage. An AI that would have self-awareness, its own desires, its own subjectivity. It does not exist today, and the debate over its very definition remains open in the scientific community.

For a CEO or CHRO, this type of AI has no operational relevance today. What matters is knowing where the tools you are buying, or that your teams are using without any governance framework, actually sit on this spectrum.


What This Means for Your Organization

Many AI tools currently deployed belong to type 2. This is true for content generation tools, data analysis, recruitment, and customer relations.

The risk I observe with clients: confusing the apparent sophistication of a type 2 tool with type 3 capabilities. A conversational agent that responds fluently does not understand your customer. It predicts the most statistically probable next word. That is powerful. It is not the same thing.

Weak AI refers to systems designed for a specific task, such as recognizing an image or translating text. This covers the vast majority of systems deployed today. Strong AI would refer to a system capable of reasoning on any subject like a human. It remains theoretical.

Do the 4 types of AI correspond to levels of danger?

Not directly. Current risks come from type 2, the only one deployed at scale. Algorithmic bias, opacity in decision-making, ungoverned AI within organizations: these are real issues today, not science-fiction scenarios tied to types 3 or 4.

Both belong to type 2, limited memory AI. They were trained on massive volumes of data and generate responses based on that learned context. They have no consciousness, nor any genuine understanding of the user’s intentions.

How do I know what type of AI a tool I am evaluating uses?

Ask the vendor two questions: what data was the tool trained on, and how does it behave when it encounters a situation it has never seen before. If the answers are vague, that is a warning signal. A well-documented type 2 tool should be able to answer both questions precisely.
