What Are the 4 Types of Artificial Intelligence?

There are four types of artificial intelligence: reactive AI, limited memory AI, theory of mind, and artificial general intelligence (AGI). Today, only the first two exist in real business environments. The last two remain theoretical or confined to fundamental research. Here is what each type means in practice.

Type 1: Reactive AI

This is the most basic type. Reactive AI stores nothing. It receives an input, produces an output. No context, no learning, no memory between interactions.

The most well-known example: Deep Blue, IBM’s program that defeated Garry Kasparov at chess in 1997. It analyzed the board position and calculated the best move. It had no memory of previous games.

In business today, spam filtering systems and simple recommendation engines operate on this principle. Useful, but limited.

Type 2: Limited Memory AI

This is where we are now. Almost every AI tool you use today belongs to this category.

Limited memory AI learns from historical data to make better decisions. It does not retain everything indefinitely, but it draws on a volume of training data to improve its responses.

Concrete examples:

  • GPT-4, Gemini, Claude: trained on billions of texts, they use that context to generate relevant responses.
  • Autonomous vehicles: they analyze past driving data to anticipate obstacles.
  • AI-powered recruitment tools: they assess applications based on patterns drawn from thousands of past hires.

This is the type of AI powering Gemini Enterprise, launched in Morocco by Maroc Cloud, and the automation tools that players like AH Digital are using to industrialize automation for Moroccan SMEs.

Type 3: Theory of Mind

This type does not exist yet. It refers to an AI capable of understanding the emotions, intentions, and mental states of the humans it interacts with.

A theory of mind AI would not simply answer your question. It would understand that you are under pressure, that your question conceals a deeper concern, and that it needs to adapt its response accordingly.

Research is progressing. But no commercial system has reached this level. What circulates under this label today is marketing, not science.

Type 4: Artificial General Intelligence

This is the ultimate stage. An AI capable of reasoning, learning, and solving any cognitive problem at human level or beyond.

This is what researchers call Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), also referred to as strong AI. Some estimate we are ten years away. Others believe it is a matter of decades.

For a business leader, the priority is not knowing when AGI will arrive. What matters is whether your organization is ready to integrate the type 2 tools that already exist and are already reshaping your teams’ roles, as highlighted in a publication from Al Akhawayn on young graduates.

What This Means for Your Organization

The four-type classification is not an academic exercise. It has immediate practical value.

When a vendor presents an AI solution, the first thing to verify is: which type is it? A reactive system will not improve over time. A limited memory system will, provided it is fed quality data.

Next: who controls the training data? A recent signal from cio-mag.com indicates that 42% of users import complete documents into uncontrolled external tools. That is a real compliance risk, not an abstraction.

Then: what is the specific use case? Limited memory AI excels at defined tasks: candidate screening, contract analysis, report generation. It does not replace a leader’s strategic judgment.

FAQ

Which type of AI is used in business today?

Almost exclusively limited memory AI. This is the type underpinning large language models (GPT-4, Gemini, Claude), predictive analytics tools, and automation systems. Reactive AI still exists in older or highly specialized systems.

Does artificial general intelligence already exist?

No. AGI remains a research objective. The spectacular announcements you read in the press concern advances in limited memory AI, not the emergence of general intelligence.

What is the difference between weak AI and strong AI?

Weak AI covers all current systems: they excel at a specific task but do not generalize. Strong AI corresponds to AGI, meaning a general intelligence capable of reasoning on any subject at human level. We are in the era of weak AI.

Do I need to understand these types to make AI decisions in business?

Yes. Not to become a technician, but to ask the right questions of your vendors and avoid unfulfilled promises. A leader who confuses reactive AI and limited memory AI makes poorly calibrated purchasing decisions.
