Type 2: General AI, the myth that shapes the debate
General AI, or AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), is the ability of a system to reason, learn and adapt to any cognitive task, as a human would.
It doesn’t exist yet.
What exists are very large language models, like GPT-4 or Gemini, that create the illusion of generality. They answer questions on law, medicine, strategy. But they don’t understand in the cognitive sense. They predict the next word with remarkable precision. That’s fundamentally different.
Why does this type of AI matter for an executive today? Because technology investment decisions are often made based on AGI promises. Some vendors sell highly sophisticated narrow AI while implying we’re approaching AGI. That’s not wrong on the trajectory. It’s misleading on the timeline.
