What Are the 4 Types of Artificial Intelligence?

There are four types of artificial intelligence: reactive AI, limited memory AI, theory of mind, and conscious AI. The first two exist and are deployed today. The last two remain theoretical. For any executive, only the first two have concrete organizational impact in 2026.

Type 1: Reactive AI

This is the simplest form. It stores nothing. It receives an input, produces an output. No context, no learning, no memory between interactions.

The most well-known example: Deep Blue, IBM’s program that defeated Garry Kasparov at chess in 1997. It analyzed the board position and calculated the best move. It had no memory of previous games.

In companies today, automatic resume filtering systems or product recommendation engines work on this principle. They respond to a rule, not a history.

Useful. Limited. Predictable. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Type 2: Limited Memory AI

This is the dominant type today. These systems learn from historical data to improve future responses. They have memory, but it’s short and structured.

GPT-4, Gemini, Claude, bank fraud detection models, demand forecasting systems in retail distribution: all of this runs on this principle. The model was trained on past data. It uses that to respond to new situations.

This is the type of AI that Moroccan companies are trying to deploy. The INSA Connect Forum 2026 asked exactly this question: how do you move from pilot project to real deployment? The challenge isn’t technological. It’s organizational. Who decides which data feeds the model? Who validates the outputs? Who is accountable when the system is wrong?

If you’re a CHRO or CEO and want to structure your approach to this type of AI, request a free diagnostic. That’s where the real decisions happen.

As I explained in my analysis on AI and SMEs, most organizations don’t yet have the internal processes to govern these systems properly.

Type 3: Theory of Mind

This type of AI doesn’t exist yet. The concept: a machine capable of understanding the emotions, intentions, and beliefs of a human interlocutor. Not just simulating an empathetic response. Actually modeling the other person’s mental state.

Current large language models give the illusion of this capability. They don’t have it. They predict the next probable word. That’s different.

For an executive, this type of AI has no operational implications today. But it will. Conversational agents for customer service, HR assistants, automated negotiation tools: all are moving in this direction.

The question to ask now: when these systems arrive, who in your organization will be able to evaluate them, govern them, challenge them?

Type 4: Conscious AI

This is the domain of science fiction and philosophy. An AI that would have self-awareness, its own desires, subjectivity. No such system exists. No scientific consensus on how we would even measure it.

Some researchers think it’s impossible by construction. Others think it’s inevitable in the long run. The debate is real and serious. But it has no implications for your board of directors in 2026.

Don’t let this debate interfere with your current investment decisions.

What This Concretely Changes for Your Organization

In Morocco, the picture is clear: according to multiple sources including LesEco.ma, AI remains poorly diffused in companies despite growing interest. The challenge is now usage, not conceptual awareness.

Most executives I meet confuse the four types. They think the AI they’re deploying is smarter than it actually is. Or conversely, they underestimate it and miss concrete use cases.

Understanding that you’re working with limited memory AI, not conscious AI, changes everything. It means the system needs quality data, human oversight, and clear guardrails. It’s not a magic black box. It’s a sophisticated statistical tool that makes predictable errors.

That’s also why choosing the right AI tool for your company depends first on understanding what type of problem you’re trying to solve.

I’ve built a diagnostic framework to assess an organization’s AI maturity across six dimensions. Download the AI Board Pack 2026 to structure your thinking before your next executive committee.

FAQ

What type of AI does ChatGPT use?

ChatGPT is a limited memory AI. It was trained on massive volumes of text data. It uses that learning to generate coherent responses. It has no consciousness, no intentions of its own, and its memory between sessions is limited unless specifically configured.

Are all 4 types of AI available today?

No. Only the first two, reactive AI and limited memory AI, are operational and deployed in companies. Theory of mind and conscious AI remain theoretical concepts with no existing commercial application.

Which AI is best suited for Moroccan companies in 2026?

Limited memory AI, in the form of language models, forecasting tools, or conversational agents. The real challenge isn’t choosing the model but the organization’s ability to integrate it into decision-making processes with appropriate AI governance.

How do I know which type of AI my vendor is offering me?

Ask two simple questions: does the system learn from my data over time? Can it explain why it made a decision? If the answer to both is no, you have reactive AI. If yes to the first, you’re dealing with limited memory AI. Everything else is marketing.
