General Artificial Intelligence Example: Current State and Perspectives
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to a system capable of performing any human cognitive task, without being limited to a specific domain. Unlike today’s specialized AI, it reasons, learns, and adapts autonomously. Currently, no fully operational example of artificial general intelligence exists. These are research prototypes, not products.
What AGI Is Not
Before discussing examples, let’s set the frame.
When Orange Morocco deploys AI to improve customer experience, when a conversational agent handles support requests, when an algorithm screens CVs: all of that is specialized AI. Highly effective within a defined scope. Useless outside it.
AGI is something different. It’s a system that could, in theory, move from a recruitment task to financial analysis, then to drafting a contract, without reprogramming. Like a senior collaborator switching contexts.
We’re not there yet.
The Projects Closest to AGI
Several serious research initiatives exist. None has achieved AGI. Some are laying groundwork.
OpenAI and the GPT Trajectory
OpenAI was founded with AGI as an explicit goal. GPT-4 and its successors show impressive generalization: they write, code, analyze, translate. But they remain statistical prediction systems. They don’t understand. They don’t reason in the true sense. They produce plausible outputs.
The distinction matters for executives: you cannot delegate strategic judgment to GPT-4. You can delegate a first-pass analysis.
DeepMind and AlphaCode / Gemini
DeepMind, Google’s subsidiary, pushes systems capable of solving complex problems across varied domains. AlphaFold solved a molecular biology problem the scientific community hadn’t cracked in fifty years. Gemini Ultra shows advanced multimodal reasoning capabilities.
These are signals. Not yet AGI.
Project Q* and OpenAI Rumors
In late 2023, reports circulated about an internal OpenAI project called Q*, which allegedly showed autonomous mathematical reasoning capabilities. OpenAI did not confirm the details. But the fact that these rumors triggered an internal governance crisis says something about the perceived stakes.
Anthropic and Safety as Priority
Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI members, works on more reliable and interpretable AI systems. Their approach is more cautious. They operate on the assumption that if AGI arrives, it must arrive with built-in safeguards from the design stage.
That’s an intellectually honest position.

Short answer: not to deploy AGI. To prepare for it, yes.
Organizations integrating specialized AI into their decision-making processes today are building the culture and reflexes that will allow them to absorb AGI when it arrives. Those waiting will be in the same position as companies that ignored the web until 2005.

The Real Obstacles Before AGI
Three structural barriers slow AGI, and they’re worth understanding as an executive.
First barrier: causal reasoning. Current systems detect correlations. They don’t understand causes. An AGI system would need to say “if I do X, Y will happen” in a context it has never encountered.
Second barrier: continuous learning without forgetting. Current models are trained, then frozen. A human learns continuously without erasing prior knowledge. Replicating this at AI system scale remains an open problem.
Third barrier: energy consumption. Large models consume considerable resources. An AGI would be exponentially more demanding. The question of economic and environmental viability is real.
What African and European Companies Should Take Away
The AGI debate is happening primarily in the United States and China. But its effects will reach everywhere.
In Morocco, Belgium, France: organizations that build serious AI governance today, that train their teams, that document their use cases, will be better positioned. Not because AGI is arriving tomorrow. Because every advance toward AGI makes specialized AI more powerful, more accessible, and harder to ignore.
The question isn’t “when does AGI arrive?” The question is “what can my organization actually do with AI today?”
