What Is an AI Engineer’s Salary in Morocco? 2026 Analysis

An AI engineer in Morocco earns between 8,000 and 35,000 Moroccan dirhams gross per month, depending on experience, sector, and city. Junior profiles start around 8,000 to 12,000 dirhams. Confirmed senior profiles in Casablanca reach 25,000 to 35,000 dirhams. Profiles with international experience or rare specializations negotiate beyond that.

Note: these ranges are estimates based on observation of job postings on Moroccan platforms and recruitment assignments conducted in this market. They do not come from a formally published salary survey for 2026.

What the Market Reveals in 2026

Morocco’s AI market is shifting in scale. Telquel.ma reports Morocco’s bet on mega data centers for AI, a structural investment whose long-term effects on technical employment remain to be confirmed. Meanwhile, Atos is partnering with Moroccan firm ABA Technology to accelerate AI deployments across Africa, according to We are Tech. This type of partnership illustrates the growing role of local players, even if its direct impact on salary levels is not yet documented. The AI:Casablanca event, which aims to open the debate on the future of work in the AI era, confirms the topic is now central to business agendas.

This context creates upward pressure on technical profiles. But compensation levels remain uneven depending on experience.

Junior Profile (0 to 3 years of experience)

Estimated gross monthly salary: 8,000 to 12,000 dirhams.

These are profiles from Moroccan engineering schools (EMI, ENSIAS, INPT) or specialized master’s programs. They know Python, machine learning libraries, and sometimes large language models. They are hired by IT services firms (ESN — entreprises de services numériques), startups, or service centers.

Mid-level Profile (3 to 7 years)

Estimated gross monthly salary: 15,000 to 25,000 dirhams.

This level corresponds to an engineer capable of designing an architecture, managing a project end-to-end, and communicating with business teams. This is the most sought-after profile on the market. Banks, telecom operators, and large industrial groups compete for these profiles.

Senior and Lead Profile (7+ years)

Estimated gross monthly salary: 25,000 to 35,000 dirhams, sometimes more.

These profiles lead teams, define AI architectures at scale, and participate in strategic decisions. Some negotiate packages including variable pay, profit-sharing, or partial remote work for European clients.

The Sectors That Pay Best

Not all sectors are equal. Here is what I observe in the projects I work on.

Finance and banking lead. Attijariwafa Bank, CIH, BMCE Bank of Africa: these groups invest in fraud detection, automated credit scoring, and conversational agents. They have the means to pay.

Telecoms follow. Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, Inwi (whose 13th inwiDAYS edition was dedicated to the theme “AI as a catalyst for business performance”): these players have massive data volumes and structured data teams.

Offshore service centers come third. They recruit AI engineers for European clients, often with salaries partially indexed to the client’s standards. This is where salary gaps are most significant.

Startups pay less in base salary but sometimes compensate with equity or flexible working conditions. The compensation terms in this segment deserve careful scrutiny before committing.

Casablanca vs Other Cities

Casablanca concentrates most opportunities and higher salaries. This is where headquarters, decision-making centers, and major AI projects are located.

Rabat follows, driven by public administrations, government agencies, and projects linked to the national digital strategy.

Marrakech and Tangier are emerging, particularly through free zones and call centers moving up toward higher value-added services.

The salary difference between Casablanca and a secondary city can be significant for the same profile. Not an absolute rule, but what published job postings reflect.

Comparison with French-Speaking Africa

Morocco remains one of the best-compensated markets in French-speaking Africa for AI profiles. Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal are developing their ecosystems. Senegal made a declaration at the GPAI (Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence), and Guinea launched the AI Xcelerate program to propel 250 companies into the AI era. These signals show a real continental dynamic, even if salaries there remain lower for comparable profiles.

For a Moroccan AI engineer, this means one concrete thing: they are competitive at the continental level, but remain underpaid compared to their European counterparts. This is precisely what attracts French and Belgian companies to recruit or outsource to Morocco.

I analyzed this dynamic in detail in my article on the best AI training options in Morocco in 2026: skills development is the variable that moves salaries the most.

What Actually Drives an AI Salary Up in Morocco

The degree opens the door. It does not set the salary.

What matters: the ability to deliver a real project, not just write code. An engineer who can speak to a CFO, understands a business process, and can defend a business case is worth twice as much as a purely technical profile.

Recognized certifications (Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, specialized cloud and AI certifications) play a growing role. They facilitate evaluation by recruiters in a context where technical assessment criteria are not always formalized.

International exposure is the most powerful lever. An engineer who has worked on projects for European clients, even remotely, returns with a very different salary negotiation capacity. This is a reality I regularly see in the recruitment assignments I conduct between Casablanca and Brussels.

FAQ

What is the average salary for a junior AI engineer in Morocco?

A junior profile with 0 to 3 years of experience can expect an estimated gross monthly salary between 8,000 and 12,000 dirhams. This figure varies by sector, city, and company size.

Can AI engineers in Morocco work for European clients?

Yes, and it is increasingly common. Offshore service centers and remote work allow engineers based in Casablanca or Rabat to work for French, Belgian, or Swiss companies. Salaries in this case are often above the local average.

What skills allow for higher salary negotiation?

Mastery of large language models, experience on projects delivered in production (not just prototypes), and the ability to communicate with business teams are the most valued skills. Recognized cloud certifications also help.

Is Morocco competitive compared to other African countries for AI salaries?

Yes. Morocco offers some of the highest compensation levels in French-speaking Africa for AI profiles, particularly due to the presence of major banking groups, telecoms, and service centers oriented toward Europe.
