Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to a system capable of learning, reasoning, and solving diverse problems the way a human would, without being limited to a specific task. Unlike today’s AI tools, it does not yet exist in operational form. But ongoing research already outlines what its impact on organizations will look like.

Narrow AI vs. Artificial General Intelligence: The Core Difference

When a Chief HR Officer uses an AI tool to screen CVs today, they are using narrow AI. It does one thing very well. It cannot do anything else.

AGI is different. An artificial general intelligence system could read that same CV, understand the job context, assess company culture, anticipate the candidate’s trajectory, and draft a summary note for the board. All without being explicitly trained on each of those tasks separately.

That is the qualitative leap that separates the two. Not a question of computing power. A question of generalizing reasoning.

The Closest Real-World Examples Today

No system today meets the strict definition of AGI. But several research projects trace its contours.

GPT-4 and Large Language Models

OpenAI published an internal study in 2023 titled “Sparks of AGI” about GPT-4. Researchers observed unexpected cross-domain reasoning capabilities: mathematical problem-solving, code generation, legal analysis, medical comprehension. Not AGI. But signals.

Google DeepMind’s Gemini

Gemini, Google DeepMind’s model, is designed to simultaneously process text, images, audio, and code. Maroc Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise in Morocco to channel and structure AI adoption in businesses. This is not AGI. But Gemini’s multimodal architecture is one of the closest building blocks.

DeepMind’s AlphaCode and AlphaFold

DeepMind produced AlphaFold, a system that solved a structural biology problem the scientific community had worked on for decades. AlphaCode generates competitive programming solutions. These systems remain specialized, but their ability to surpass human experts in complex domains foreshadows what AGI would do at scale.

Autonomous Agents

AI agents, including open-source projects like AutoGPT, can chain tasks without human intervention: search for information, analyze it, draft a report, send an email. Still fragile. But that is the direction.

What AGI Would Concretely Change for a Business

Let’s ask directly: if AGI existed tomorrow, what would change for a CEO or Chief HR Officer?

The boundary between human decision and machine decision would blur. Today, AI recommends. Tomorrow, it could decide, argue, and defend its position before a committee.

Analytical, advisory, and synthesis roles would be directly affected. Not relationship, negotiation, or leadership roles. But everything that relies on processing complex information.

Moroccan civil society is already demanding a seat at the AI governance table. That is not a signal executives should ignore.

When Will AGI Arrive?

Estimates vary widely among researchers. Some say ten years. Others say fifty. A few believe we will never reach it in the form we imagine.

What is certain: current systems are progressing faster than expected. And organizations waiting for certainty before acting are taking a real strategic risk.

The right posture for an executive is not to know when AGI will arrive. It is to build an organization capable of absorbing changes of this magnitude, starting now.
