What Is the Salary of an AI Engineer in Morocco? 2026 Analysis

An AI engineer in Morocco earns between 8,000 and 35,000 Moroccan dirhams gross per month, depending on experience, sector, and location. A junior profile starts around 8,000 to 12,000 dirhams. A senior profile with five or more years of experience can reach 30,000 to 35,000 dirhams, particularly in large companies or international subsidiaries.

These ranges reflect what I observe in recruitment assignments I conduct between Casablanca, Rabat, and European markets. They are not set in stone. The AI market in Morocco is reshaping itself quickly.

What Actually Drives Salary Variation

Experience First

Morocco’s AI market is still young. Profiles with three to five years of real experience on machine learning, natural language processing, or computer vision projects are rare. That scarcity has a price.

Junior engineer (zero to two years): 8,000 to 12,000 dirhams gross. Mid-level profile (two to five years): 14,000 to 22,000 dirhams gross. Senior or lead profile (five years and above): 25,000 to 35,000 dirhams gross.

These levels can be exceeded in specific contexts, particularly for profiles capable of leading AI governance projects or integrating AI into critical systems.

Sector Matters

Not all sectors pay the same. What I observe with my clients:

Subsidiaries of international groups and offshoring companies pay above the local average. Tata Consultancy Services, which is betting on its Moroccan subsidiary to serve French-speaking Europe and Rabat’s digital projects, is one of the actors structuring local demand for AI profiles. Maroc Cloud, which recently launched Gemini Enterprise in Morocco, is an additional signal that the ecosystem is densifying.

Banks and insurance companies offer competitive packages, often with significant benefits in kind.

Local startups pay less in base salary but sometimes offer profit-sharing mechanisms. The risk is real. So is the upside.

The public sector remains behind on compensation, even as demand for AI skills grows in state digital projects.

Location Last

Casablanca concentrates the majority of offers and the highest salaries. Rabat follows, driven by public projects and institutions. Marrakech and Tangier remain marginal on this segment, even if offshoring creates some opportunities there.

If you are recruiting an AI engineer for a Casablanca-based role that could potentially be performed remotely, expect negotiation on location as much as on salary. Compensation and working conditions are linked.

International Pressure on Local Salaries

This is the topic many HR directors have not yet factored into their salary grids.

A competent Moroccan AI engineer can today work for a French, Belgian, or Canadian company remotely, with a euro-denominated salary. This reality pulls salary expectations upward, even for local positions.

The Hespress article on offshoring and Morocco’s move upmarket raises this challenge: the country must move up the value chain, which means paying profiles commensurate with that added value. This is not a contradiction. It is an equation.

For recruiters, ignoring this reality means losing the best profiles to the European market. I cover this in more detail in my analysis on how to work in AI in Morocco.

I have built a diagnostic framework to help HR directors position their AI salary grids against both local and international markets. Download the AI Board Pack 2026.

Comparison with French-Speaking Africa

From what I observe in projects I conduct between Europe and Africa, Morocco is favorably positioned on AI salaries within French-speaking Africa, ahead of markets like Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal. This observation is based on the density of the offshoring ecosystem, proximity to European markets, and growing investment from international groups. This is a market signal, not an official ranking.

Tunisia remains competitive on data science profiles, with a solid university offering. But Morocco’s ecosystem, particularly around Casablanca Finance City and technology hubs, attracts more high-value-added projects.

What This Means for a Recruiter or HR Director

If you are recruiting an AI engineer in Morocco in 2026, three concrete points:

First: do not rely on 2023 salary grids. The market has moved. Profiles trained on large language models, AI governance, or cloud deployment have expectations that have evolved accordingly.

Second: the package matters as much as the base salary. Partial remote work, ongoing training, access to state-of-the-art tools. An AI engineer who cannot experiment in their role will leave for an environment that allows it.

Third: variable compensation tied to concrete AI deliverables is beginning to appear in negotiations. This is a signal that the market is maturing.

If you are a candidate, know that your ability to demonstrate measurable impact on a real project is worth more than your degree. As I explain in my article on the benefits of AI in recruitment, evaluation tools are also changing on the employer side.

FAQ

What is the average salary of a junior AI engineer in Morocco?

A junior AI engineer with zero to two years of experience typically earns between 8,000 and 12,000 dirhams gross per month in Casablanca. This level varies by sector and company size. Full salary ranges by experience level are detailed in the main section of this article.

Can AI engineers in Morocco negotiate a euro-denominated salary?

Yes, particularly for remote positions with European companies or in subsidiaries of international groups. This possibility influences salary expectations even for local positions, which partly explains the upward pressure on Moroccan salary grids.

Which companies pay AI engineers best in Morocco?

Subsidiaries of international groups such as Tata Consultancy Services, high-value offshoring companies, banks, and cloud players like Maroc Cloud generally offer the most competitive compensation.

Is an AI engineer’s salary in Morocco competitive compared to Tunisia or Senegal?

From my market observation, Morocco is favorably positioned on this segment within French-speaking Africa, driven by the density of its offshoring ecosystem and the presence of international groups. Tunisia remains a solid market for data science profiles, but Morocco’s ecosystem attracts more high-value-added projects. This remains a field reading, not an official ranking.
